The Photo Essay:

Assigned: First day of term.

Due: May 23

This is the long-term project for the Spring. We will look at the work by a number of photographers who create, or have created photo essays. Although may people think of most photography as documentary in nature, the use of photographs arranged in the form of a photo essay can build a complex visual story that complements and sometimes dispenses with need for the written word. Like musical compositions, the photo essay draws strength from the notion that “the whole is greater than the sum of its’ parts”. In other words, an effective photo essay documents far more than any number of unarranged photographs ever can —no matter how good each individual photo may be.
You will then decide on a topic and create your own essay. The essay should have a minimum of 10 images with text. It may be displayed as a poster, a magazine spread, or a Powerpoint presentation.
(See project rubric.) Minimum number of prints=10
